Your Stress Could Be Making Your Autoimmune Disorder Worse

Think back—were you in the middle of an especially stressful situation right before you were diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder? If so, you’re like the vast majority of autoimmune patients. Unfortunately, stress and autoimmune disorders tend to feed off each other in a vicious pattern. Stress can trigger an autoimmune disorder, autoimmune disorders can boost stress in patients who are living with them, and stress can exacerbate symptoms of autoimmune disease. While there are other causes of autoimmune disorders, one of the best things that you can do for yourself is to learn to manage your stress. Meditation or taking a warm, relaxing bath are good options, or, if you have trouble sitting still, then going for a run or doing another physical activity may help.
